Thermoplastic pavement markings are used to clearly mark traffic lanes, legends, symbols, and road boundaries on roads, parking lots, and other paved surfaces. They are thicker and more wear resistant than marking paints. Preformed polymer tape is a heavy grade material with reflective beads embedded in the plastic. They come in granular extrude or preformed shapes and lines, including arrows, lane lines, legends, and symbols for bike paths, railroads, and handicapped spaces. These tapes are heated and applied to paved or concrete surfaces. The most common applications of preformed thermoplastic pavement markings are found at intersections as transverse markings such as stop lines, legends, crosswalks, arrows, bike lane symbols, and accessibility symbols.
These markings are used primarily because of their durability and cost-effective service life. Since the plastics are melted into the surface, they are not easily damaged by the snowplows. Typically, the preformed thermoplastic markings can last 4 to 8 years.
